Introduction to spin.

The first video here provides an introduction to spin. The Pauli matrices
and the notation used for spin are pretty standardized and I think you will find that Griffiths (sections 4.4.1 and 4.4.3) and I are compatible on that. The first video introduces Pauli matrices and nomenclature for spin states. The second video looks at how spin combines and correlates for 2 electron states. These spin correlated states play a big role in a lot of phenomena related to quantum mechanics, e.g., magnetism and superconductivity. The singlet state is important in theories of bonding. A typical covalent bond is referred to as a singlet-coupled electron pair, meaning that it involves two electrons and that the spin state of those two electrons is the spin-singlet state shown in the 2nd video.

  1. for the second video: is the sigma_1_minus and sigma_2_minus identical?

  2. and can you please write our the matrices form with the symbolism (of the operator as well as the spin) to make it more clear?

  3. The key thing that works about names, is that they are not all the same. When you post as unknown it can get confusing and difficult to follow the threads of conversations when there are 5 or 6 people all posting as unknown. You can make up a name. Any name. Please do not post as unknown.

  4. Hello, it seems that these videos are not loading. Other students are also having this issue.

Midterm 2 solutions

Here are solutions to midterm 2. I see that I did not write it in the solutions, but it is helpful for sp2 type integrals to recall that \(\...
