This video explores the origin of the size of the hydrogen atom.
The wave-functions of the hydrogen atom exhibit a characteristic quantum length scale known as the Bohr radius. But it is not really a radius. What is it? Where does it come from? Why isn't it larger? Why isn't it smaller? This video, Origin of Length, addresses this basic question and examines the origin of length in the H atom system. The approach used, a trial wave-function with a variable length-scale parameter, can be used to understand the emergence of quantum length scales in harmonic oscillator, delta function potential and other quantum systems as well.
